Tiger Death Mystery Lingers: One Year On, Killers Unfound
20 Feb
Summary
- A tiger's carcass was found floating in backwaters one year ago.
- Suspicious neck marks resembled gunshot wounds, prompting an inquiry.
- Forensic analysis was inconclusive due to submersion and decomposition.

A year has passed since the discovery of an eight-year-old tiger's carcass floating in the backwaters of the Ambligola dam on February 17, 2025. This incident, located on the border of Shivamogga district's Shikaripura and Sagara taluks, remains an unsolved mystery, casting a shadow over wildlife conservation efforts.
Conservationist Nagaraj Bellur noted suspicious marks near the tiger's neck, resembling gunshot wounds. This observation prompted the forest minister to order a swift investigation, with a report expected within ten days. Unfortunately, the Forensic Sciences Laboratory (FSL) found that the prolonged submersion of the carcass, estimated between 24-36 hours, had washed away or masked any trace evidence, rendering definitive conclusions impossible.
Despite the FSL report ruling out poaching, the forest department's inquiry is ongoing. Statements from local residents are being recorded as officials continue to pursue leads. Conservationists express disappointment that the perpetrators behind the tiger's suspicious death are still unidentified, emphasizing the ongoing need for justice.
