Fishermen Urge Sea Ambulance for Thoothukudi
6 Nov
Summary
- Fishermen requested a Sea Ambulance for medical emergencies at sea.
- The district has over 500 mechanized and 2,000 country boats.
- Fishermen also demanded coastal protection structures like groynes.

Fishermen in Thoothukudi have appealed to the Tamil Nadu Government to station a 'Sea Ambulance' in the coastal town. This plea comes amid concerns for the safety of fishermen facing distress or sudden medical emergencies while at sea. The district is home to more than 500 mechanized boats and over 2,000 country boats, underscoring the need for immediate medical response capabilities.
The fishermen emphasized that while communication devices are carried, the lack of a 'Sea Ambulance' prevents crucial medical aid during the 'golden hours.' They are requesting a vessel equipped with life-saving equipment, medicines, trained staff, and communication devices. District Collector Vishu Mahajan has assured the fishermen that their demand will be promptly conveyed to the state government.
Additionally, the fishermen voiced concerns regarding the need for groynes to protect boats and coastal structures from violent tides. A previous announcement in 2022 for groyne and fishing harbour development at Tharuvaikulam has reportedly seen no visible progress, awaiting Coastal Regulatory Zone clearance. The Collector also promised to address other demands, including improved bus services, drinking water, CCTV installation, mobile fuel tankers, and upgrading Periyathaazhai into a town panchayat.
