22 Jan
Summary
- Project aims to enhance waste collection, segregation, and recycling.
- Waste will be converted into compost, fuel, and other valuable materials.
- The city expects to generate approximately Rs 31 lakh monthly from waste.

Thiruvananthapuram is on the cusp of a major transformation in its waste management system with the impending final approval of the multi-crore CITIIS 2.0 project. Expected to be greenlit by the Union government in February 2026, the project will enable the city corporation to sign an agreement with the Centre, paving the way for work to commence in April or May 2026.
The CITIIS 2.0 programme, a national initiative for smart cities, focuses on sustainable urban development and resource recovery. Thiruvananthapuram, selected as one of 18 cities nationwide, will implement advanced technological and infrastructural improvements. This includes facilities for refuse-derived fuel, recycling stations, and IT-enabled waste tracking systems.
The project aims to strengthen existing decentralized waste collection, already managed by Haritha Karma Sena workers, and integrate it with new centralized facilities. Officials anticipate that converting waste into compost, fuel, and other materials could generate an estimated Rs 31 lakh in revenue monthly for the city.
