Plastic Waste Crisis: City vs. Company Blame Game
19 Mar
Summary
- Plastic waste dumped near Thiruvallam poses health hazard.
- City corporation and Clean Kerala Company dispute waste clearance.
- Corporation to directly monitor waste in 12 wards to improve oversight.

Residents near Panathura, Thiruvallam, are protesting a mounting health hazard due to large quantities of plastic waste dumped along a service road. The accumulation has persisted for several days, leading to public outcry and demands for immediate action from the city corporation.
The Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation directed Clean Kerala Company Ltd (CKCL), the state agency responsible for non-biodegradable waste, to clear the area. However, CKCL cited subcontracting arrangements, which the corporation rejected, asserting that CKCL cannot evade responsibility.
Mayor V V Rajesh criticized CKCL's recurring inefficiencies and stated strict instructions have been issued for waste removal. The corporation secretary has intervened, initiating urgent steps to clear the piled-up garbage and restore normalcy.
To enhance accountability, the corporation will now directly monitor non-biodegradable waste collection in 12 of its 62 wards, aiming to prevent future lapses.
