Thiruvananthapuram Land: From Waste Dump to Bus Hub?
10 Mar
Summary
- Jagathy Junction land holds over 100 tonnes of legacy waste.
- Plans include a bus parking or processing centre after waste removal.
- Biomining will be used to scientifically clear the buried waste.

Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation is re-evaluating the use of its land at Jagathy Junction, where over 100 tonnes of legacy waste remains buried.
Strong opposition from local residents has led the corporation to reconsider its initial proposal for a refuse-derived fuel (RDF) plant. Preliminary discussions are underway to transform the site into a public utility, such as a private bus parking facility or a biodegradable waste processing centre.
The corporation plans to remove the accumulated waste through biomining, a scientific process involving segregation and recycling of old waste to reclaim the land. This initiative aligns with broader state-level efforts to clear legacy waste dumps across Kerala.
