12 Jul
Summary
- £30 million is invested in modernizing Thanet's water network.
- Work includes £4 million to improve recovery times after incidents.
- £16 million allocated for new nitrate treatment schemes.

Residents on the Kent coast are set to benefit from substantial upgrades to their water supply, as Southern Water commits £30 million to modernizing the network in Thanet. This extensive investment program aims to enhance water quality and improve service reliability for the community.
A significant portion, £4 million, will be dedicated to accelerating recovery times following water supply incidents. This measure will ensure reservoirs are refilled more rapidly, minimizing disruptions for customers.
Further enhancements include £16 million earmarked for the implementation of new nitrate treatment schemes, directly addressing concerns over water quality. Additionally, £3 million will be invested in upgrading disinfection processes, with further capital allocated to modernizing backup power supplies, control systems, and communication infrastructure.
These improvements come in the wake of recent swimming bans issued for Thanet's beaches due to water quality issues, with the latest occurring in June. The company also faced legal repercussions, having pleaded guilty in April 2025 to 13 charges concerning untreated sewage spills in the area. In 2021, Southern Water was fined £90 million after being prosecuted by the Environment Agency for sewage dumping offenses.
