A significant portion of Four Winns Ranch, near Wimberley, Texas, has been permanently protected through a conservation easement, totaling 165 acres. This initiative, led by the descendants of artist James Buchanan Buck Winn Jr., safeguards the property's wildlife habitats, historic elements, and critical water resources. The ranch, which Winn purchased in 1937, was a source of inspiration for his diverse artistic endeavors, including painting and sculpting.
The conserved land offers refuge to numerous bird species, including the federally protected Golden-cheeked Warbler, highlighting its ecological significance in the rapidly developing Texas Hill Country. Its location along the Blanco River and Pierce Creek is vital for replenishing important groundwater aquifers and maintaining water quality for Central Texas.
This permanent conservation easement, held by Hill Country Conservancy in partnership with the NRCS, ensures the land's historical and ecological integrity while allowing for continued agricultural and ecotourism activities. The project demonstrates a commitment to preserving the ranch's unique legacy for future generations.
