15,600 Hatchlings Emerge in Actor's South Pacific Sanctuary
7 Oct
Summary
- Over 15,600 green sea turtle hatchlings emerged in the 2024-25 season.
- Marlon Brando's South Pacific atoll Tetiaroa is now a dedicated turtle sanctuary.
- Rising global heat poses a significant threat to the future of these turtles.
Tetiaroa, a coral atoll in the South Pacific once owned by actor Marlon Brando, now serves as a crucial sanctuary for green sea turtles. The Tetiaroa Society's February 2026 newsletter highlights a successful 2024-25 nesting season, estimating over 15,600 hatchlings emerged.
This season, researchers recorded 430 tracks and 161 nests, with 113 female sightings, including some returning after long absences. Efforts also included rescuing and releasing 227 hatchlings.
Originally discovered by Brando in 1966, the atoll, located north of Tahiti, has transformed from a personal retreat into a protected environmental haven. Formal scientific surveys began in 2007, initially finding far fewer nests.
A major concern for the sanctuary's future is rising global temperatures, which affect sand temperature and, consequently, the sex ratio of hatchlings. Dr. Cécile Gaspar warns that unchecked warming could lead to the extinction of these turtles.
