Tehkhand Waste-to-Energy Plant Expands, Boosts Power Generation by 80%
30 Sep, 2025
Summary
- Tehkhand plant expansion to increase capacity by 20 MW, total power to 45 MW
- Facility to produce 20,000 cubic meters of biogas per day, convert to 8 tons of Bio-CNG
- Expansion to cost ₹435 crore, no additional land required

As of September 30th, 2025, the Tehkhand waste-to-energy (WTE) plant in Southeast Delhi is preparing for a significant expansion. The draft Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) report for the project is now open for public consultation, a crucial step before seeking clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
Operated by Jindal Urban Infrastructure Limited, the Tehkhand plant currently processes around 2,000 tons of municipal waste daily and generates 25 MW of electricity. The upcoming expansion will increase the plant's capacity by an additional 20 MW, bringing the total power generation to 45 MW - an 80% increase.
Furthermore, the facility plans to produce up to 20,000 cubic meters of biogas per day from leachate and green waste slurry. This biogas can then be converted into approximately 8 tons of Bio-CNG (Bio-Compressed Natural Gas), providing an additional revenue stream and reducing the plant's environmental impact.
The ₹900 crore expansion project will cost ₹435 crore, with the Jindal group stating that no additional land will be required as space for expansion is already available within the existing premises. The plant is designed to operate in an integrated manner with Delhi's first engineered sanitary landfill, ensuring the safe disposal of ash and other by-products.
