Summary
- High schooler Brandon Lin founded ReCap Project in 2023 to recycle medical plastics.
- Over 2,100 pounds of plastic diverted from landfills annually.
- Recycled plastics are transformed into items like combs and clipboards.

A remarkable initiative at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford University is addressing the significant issue of medical plastic waste. Founded in 2023 by 16-year-old Brandon Lin, the ReCap Project aims to keep uncontaminated medical plastics out of landfills. Lin has already saved over 2,100 pounds of plastic, equivalent to millions of individual pieces, from being discarded.
Medical waste, particularly single-use plastics, contributes to microplastics and toxic emissions. A study indicated that healthcare facilities generate millions of metric tons of such waste annually, with minimal recycling rates. Lin collaborates with hospital staff to collect safe, non-biohazard plastics like medication caps and needle covers. These collected materials are then sorted by Lin's family.
The sorted plastics are sent to Peninsula Precious Plastics, where they are shredded and remanufactured. The resulting products, such as combs and clipboards, are then donated or given back to the hospital. For instance, combs are provided to Samaritan House in San Mateo, and clipboards made from hospital-sourced plastics were given as a thank you to the pediatric ICU staff.
