11 Feb
Summary
- Over 21,000 waterbirds from 69 species were counted.
- Migratory birds comprised over 36% of the total count.
- Threats like waste dumping endanger these vital habitats.

The Tamirabharani Waterbird Count, an annual initiative since 2011, recently documented over 21,000 waterbirds across 69 species in 68 irrigation tanks. This extensive survey, involving 250 volunteers in Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Thoothukudi districts, underscores the ecological significance of the Tamirabharani river system.
Thoothukudi district, with its larger tanks, proved to be a biodiversity hotspot, supporting a substantial portion of both bird abundance and species richness. Kadambakulam tank recorded the highest bird numbers. Little Cormorant and Eurasian Coot were among the most frequently observed species.
More than 36% of the recorded birds were migratory, utilizing the Central Asian Flyway. These irrigation tanks serve as crucial wintering grounds and stopover sites for numerous species. The survey identified species like the near-threatened Black-tailed Godwit and various migratory ducks.
