Tamil Nadu announced major environmental initiatives on September 7, 2026, totaling over ₹271 crore. The Forest Minister unveiled a ₹100.72 crore Forest Field Workforce Revitalisation Scheme, slated for five years, to enhance forest protection and wildlife conservation capacities.
Further addressing environmental concerns, a ₹60.58 crore Forest Fire Management Plan will be implemented over five years to combat the rising incidence of forest fires through preventive and mitigation measures.
The state also plans to establish 25 'Nature Parks' in rural, urban, and peri-urban areas for ₹10 crore, aiming to boost environmental awareness and biodiversity conservation.
Other planned projects include training for new forest personnel, a Centre for Tree Taxonomy, naturalist training, a mobile wildlife diagnostic lab, and a genomic study for palmyrah. Eco-friendly tourism will be promoted with solar/electric boats at Pichavaram.
Environment Minister V.K. Rajeev announced the transformation of 200 schools and five colleges into 'Blue-Green Campuses' annually at ₹53.75 crore to raise climate change awareness.
Additionally, a City Biodiversity Index will be developed for all 24 municipal corporations for ₹2 crore, and five Emergency Response Centres will be set up by the TNPCB for ₹5 crore to strengthen environmental monitoring and response.
