- Aims to protect endangered species, rehabilitate ecosystems

On September 9, 2025, the Tamil Nadu government launched the Tamil Nadu Marine Resources Foundation (TNMRF) to protect and restore the state's marine biodiversity. The foundation, established by Environment and Climate Change Minister Thangam Thennarasu and Forests Minister R.S. Rajakannappan, along with senior officials, will focus on safeguarding endangered species, rehabilitating ecosystems such as coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass, and expanding protected areas.
The TNMRF will also support sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities by training fisherfolk in eco-friendly practices and promoting alternatives like aquaculture, seaweed farming, and coastal crafts. Additionally, the foundation will facilitate eco-tourism, environmental education, and cutting-edge research in marine geographic information systems and biodiversity-mapping.
At the launch event, the ministers also gave away appointment orders to 333 forest personnel selected through the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission. The Environment Minister also unveiled the Manali Ennore Restoration and Rejuvenation Council (MERRC), a special purpose vehicle to restore the environmentally sensitive Manali-Ennore region following a major oil spill in December 2023.
