The Tamil Nadu government has allocated ₹1.3 crore this year to initiate conservation efforts for Bengal foxes and golden jackals. These species are crucial for maintaining the ecological balance within the state's diverse habitats. Both Bengal foxes and golden jackals are currently afforded the highest legal protection under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
A preliminary study by the Advanced Institute for Wildlife Conservation revealed a significant decline in their populations and ranges over the last three to four decades. The species have reportedly disappeared from many districts and are now found only in limited pockets within Dharmapuri, Tiruvannamalai, Salem, Villupuram, and Madurai districts.
To address these concerns, the state has approved funding for a comprehensive assessment of threats, habitat use, and distribution patterns. The conservation roadmap includes identifying critical habitats, implementing habitat improvement measures, controlling poaching, raising public awareness, and establishing a captive breeding center in Salem Zoo.
