Bird Census Reveals Rich Biodiversity in Tamil Nadu Forests
15 Feb
Summary
- Annual bird census recorded over 100 terrestrial species.
- Census conducted across multiple districts in Tamil Nadu.
- Effort aims to support habitat management and bird conservation.

A comprehensive Statewide terrestrial bird census was recently completed across multiple districts in Tamil Nadu's central region. The two-day initiative, conducted on Saturday and Sunday, involved over 150 Forest department staff, bird enthusiasts, and college students.
In Tiruchi district, the census spanned 20 locations within reserved forests and other key areas, recording a high diversity of species. Similarly, Pudukottai district saw teams survey 25 locations, noting various migrant and resident bird species.
The primary objective of this annual census is to document bird species and population numbers, evaluate habitat conditions, and gather data crucial for the conservation of both resident and migratory birds. The findings underscore the significant role terrestrial birds play in ecological balance through seed dispersal and pest control, serving as indicators of healthy forest ecosystems.
