Dairy Waste Floods Tajpur: Blame Game Erupts
4 Oct
Summary
- Tajpur Dairy Complex streets waterlogged with waste for three days.
- Dispute over closure of 'Seechewal model' wastewater treatment system.
- Municipal corporation cites inadequate treatment plant capacity.
For the past three days, the Tajpur Dairy Complex has experienced severe waterlogging on its streets due to dairy waste and sludge. This situation has made movement difficult for workers within the complex, which houses around 160 dairy units and an estimated 18,000 cattle.
A dispute has arisen concerning the complex's wastewater treatment system, specifically the 'Seechewal model'. Tajpur Dairy Association president Lovely Singh alleges that Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal was responsible for shutting down this system, which consists of three interconnected wells designed to filter wastewater before discharge. Singh claims this closure led to the wastewater backup and subsequent flooding.
Municipal corporation officials, however, attribute the overflow to the insufficient capacity of the current effluent treatment plant (ETP). They state the existing ETP can treat approximately 2.25 million liters daily, which is less than the total wastewater generated. To address this long-term, the civic body is developing a second ETP. In the interim, they plan to clear affected roads and drainage blockages.
