As of October 9th, 2025, residents and businesses in the North Yorkshire market town of Tadcaster are worried about delays to a planned flood alleviation scheme. The town has suffered major flooding on several occasions, including in 2015 when a bridge collapsed and left the community split in two.
The Environment Agency has stated that it remains "fully committed" to the proposed flood protection project for Tadcaster. However, the agency has requested extra time to review the plan after receiving an objection from Samuel Smith's Brewery, which is based in the town, as well as "other concerns" that were raised during the planning process.
Nicola Eades, who runs a dental practice on Bridge Street, has expressed frustration with the delays, saying "Delays we're not accepting. This has to go ahead." The community is eager for the flood alleviation scheme to move forward and provide much-needed protection against the town's recurring inundation issues.
