Ski Resort Water System Fights Summer Wildfires
13 Aug
Summary
- Ski resort infrastructure repurposed to aid wildfire containment efforts.
- Water reservoirs and pipes usually for snowmaking now support firefighting.
- Alpine communities prepare for increased wildfire risk due to climate change.
In Adelboden, Switzerland, a mid-altitude ski resort is repurposing its snowmaking equipment to combat the growing threat of wildfires during hot summers. With glaciers retreating and snowfall becoming less reliable due to climate change, the Adelboden-Lenk area, which relies heavily on artificial snow, is leveraging its infrastructure for a new purpose.
The resort's system of underground water pipes, pumps, and reservoirs, typically used to supply 210 snow cannons and 50 snow lances, can now aid firefighters. These resources can create wet buffer zones to slow fires and provide water for helicopter refilling.
While Switzerland has not experienced large-scale fires this year, the risk is assessed as high nationwide, including the Bern region where Adelboden is located. This proactive measure reflects a broader concern for increasing drought and wildfire potential in Alpine areas, which are popular summer destinations.
Experts note that while such adaptations offer temporary help, they do not address the root causes of climate change. Nevertheless, local authorities stress the importance of preparedness, acknowledging that this summer's conditions may signal a trend of increasingly challenging environmental conditions.
