Alpine Tunnels: Swiss Climate Choice Over Road Freight

Switzerland's extensive network of Alpine tunnels serves a critical climate purpose, facilitating the shift of freight traffic from roads to rail. Approved by voters in 1994 through the Alpine Initiative, this constitutional mandate aims to reduce environmental pressure on the Alps.

The construction of massive base tunnels allows freight trains to traverse the mountains on flatter, more energy-efficient routes. This infrastructure shift has led to a significant decrease in truck traffic, with rail now carrying approximately 69% of freight crossing the Alps as of 2025.

Beyond emission reductions, this policy lessens noise pollution and safety risks for communities in Alpine valleys. The underground routes also provide resilience against extreme weather events, ensuring continued transport flow when surface routes are compromised.

While construction posed environmental challenges, Switzerland managed waste and protected habitats. Efforts continue to meet targets, including reducing annual truck crossings, showcasing an ongoing commitment to its green infrastructure.
