Swans Rescued from Recurring Oil Spill in Reading River
26 Sep, 2025
Summary
- 10 swans rescued from oil spill in River Kennet
- Oil spill occurred from same drain as previous incident in 2024
- Authorities investigating source, Thames Water claims third party responsible

On September 26th, 2025, a concerning environmental incident unfolded in Reading, as 10 swans were rescued from an oil spill in the River Kennet. The rescue operation was carried out by Swan Support, a local wildlife organization, after a member of the public reported seeing an animal covered in oil.
This is not the first time swans have been affected by an oil spill in this location. In July 2024, several swans had to be rescued from the same area after a similar incident. The Environment Agency (EA) is now investigating the latest spill, while Thames Water claims a third party may be responsible for the oil entering the river.
Wendy Hermon, a long-time volunteer with Swan Support, expressed her frustration with the recurring issue, stating, "Why is it happening again? It's not good enough. This is the worst it's been. Something needs to be done about it." The oil spill has caused significant stress for the swans, as they are removed from their natural habitat to be washed and cared for.
The EA has condemned the pollution incident, stating that they "share the public anger" and are working closely with Thames Water to identify the source and assess the environmental impact. The utility company, on the other hand, maintains that the oil may have entered the river through a roadside gully, potentially due to the actions of a third party.
As the investigation continues, the local community and environmental authorities remain committed to addressing this ongoing issue and ensuring the well-being of the affected wildlife.
