Surrey Pond Hits Two-Decade Low Amid Drought

James Herd, director of reserves management at Surrey Wildlife Trust, stated he has never witnessed the pond so low in his 17 years with the organization. He highlighted that the situation is a clear indicator of the ongoing drought's severity, with plants and trees showing signs of struggle.
Herd emphasized that this summer's extreme conditions are not isolated incidents and that measures are needed to prepare for more frequent dry spells. He advocates for natural solutions, such as encouraging the return of beavers, to help rewet the lowland heathland habitat where Pond Farm is located. Surrey Wildlife Trust has previously considered obtaining a license to release beavers into the county, a plan that is still under discussion with Natural England.
