Activist Vows to Fight Renewed Surrey Oil Plans
10 Aug
Summary
- Renewed oil drilling plans in Surrey face fresh objections.
- Supreme Court previously blocked similar plans due to climate impact.
- Public can still voice objections until council decision.

Campaigners are gearing up to challenge new oil drilling proposals in Surrey, reigniting a fight that was previously taken to the Supreme Court. These fresh plans target the Horse Hill area of Horley.
Last year, the Supreme Court halted original extraction applications, citing a failure to adequately consider the climate impact of burning the oil from new wells. UK Oil and Gas Plc has been approached for comment regarding the latest submission.
Sarah Finch, a prominent campaigner who has successfully fought these plans before, expressed optimism about the current challenge. She noted that the climate crisis has become more urgent, a factor she believes decision-makers on Surrey County Council cannot ignore.
The council, which previously approved the now-overturned application, will once again deliberate on this second bid. Finch encouraged the public to submit objections, stating that opportunities to voice concerns remain open until the council reaches a decision, even though formal consultation closed on July 13.
