Surat Creeks: Survey Progressing for Flood Solutions
4 Aug
Summary
- 35km of Surat's creeks surveyed using DGPS and drones.
- Multiple data sets analyzed for comprehensive creek flooding patterns.
- Mithikhadi creek danger level survey to be expedited.

Surat is making progress on a comprehensive survey of its creek system to address long-term flooding issues. To date, 35km out of 188km of creeks have been surveyed, with data processing underway for approximately 23km. This crucial work involves advanced technologies like Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) and drones. The findings are being discussed by the Surat Municipal Corporation's creek flood mitigation committee.
Officials are analyzing diverse datasets, including rainfall records, industrial effluent, past flood levels, and tidal data, to create a detailed hydrology model. This model aims to deepen the understanding of flooding patterns within the city's extensive creek network. Preparations for a detailed project report are also in motion.
Further steps include an immediate survey of Mithikhadi creek's danger level and recommendations for desilting or dredging to improve water flow. Drone surveys will commence in restricted airport zones after air traffic control clearance. The committee is also exploring options for floodwater management near Biodiversity Park and potential diversion of Varachha creek water directly into the Tapi river.
