Super Typhoon Bavi, a powerful Category 5 storm, recently caused significant destruction as it swept across Guam and the U.S. Northern Mariana Islands. The typhoon's eye made a historic pass directly over Rota, an island northeast of Guam, with sustained winds estimated near 180 mph. Widespread structural damage, downed power lines, and flooded roads were reported across the affected islands, particularly on Rota.
Currently, Bavi is moving west and northwest over the western Pacific Ocean. While it is expected to weaken due to increasing wind shear and cooler waters, it has grown in size. This expansion means that parts of Taiwan and eastern China, including areas near Shanghai, could still experience tropical storm wind gusts.
The western Pacific Ocean is the most active region for tropical cyclones globally. Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands typically experience such storms multiple times a year, with the season running from June to December. Recent years have seen intense typhoons like Sinlaku, Mawar, and Yutu impact the region, causing substantial damage.
