Clear Lake Mercury Mine Cleanup Enters New Phase

Summary

  • Residential cleanup precedes large-scale mine waste removal.
  • Approximately 2.5 million tons of mercury-laden waste to be addressed.
  • Work is scheduled to commence in autumn 2026.
  • The cleanup aims to prevent further mercury contamination of Clear Lake.

A critical new stage of cleanup is commencing at the Sulphur Bank Mercury Mine, situated on the shore of Clear Lake in Northern California. This initiative focuses on addressing decades of mercury contamination, with initial work targeting residential properties. Following this, efforts will shift to the substantial mine waste problem, which amounts to approximately 2.5 million tons.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the final cleanup plan in December 2023. This plan outlines the excavation, consolidation, and covering of the vast mine waste piles. Additionally, contaminated waste along the lakeshore will be removed. The residential cleanup, involving about 6,000 cubic yards of waste from 13 properties, is slated to begin in autumn 2026.

This project is not the first intervention at the site, as eight previous cleanups have already been completed. These earlier efforts focused on issues like soil erosion and surface-water management. The current comprehensive approach aims to stop contaminated material from migrating into the surrounding environment and substantially reduce mercury entering Clear Lake, where it can biomagnify in the food chain.

Funding for this Superfund cleanup project is being advanced under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The investment aims to further mine-waste cleanup and enhance safety for limited use by the Elem Indian Colony residents. Continued studies are underway to understand the complex relationship between the mine and the broader Clear Lake ecosystem.
