Sukhna Lake Gets 10,000 New Fish Residents
22 Apr
Summary
- Approximately 10,000 fish seeds were released into Sukhna Lake.
- The initiative aims to restore ecological balance and aid migratory birds.
- Fish species released include native carp like rohu, catla, and mrigal.

In a proactive measure to bolster Sukhna Lake's delicate ecosystem, approximately 10,000 fish seeds were released into the water on Tuesday. This action precedes World Fish Migration Day, observed annually on May 23.
The stocking exercise introduced indigenous carp species, specifically rohu, catla, and mrigal. This initiative is designed as a strategic intervention to restore ecological balance within the lake.
Officials highlighted that the stocking would enhance water quality and fortify the lake's food chain. This is particularly crucial for migratory birds that rely on fish as a significant food source during their winter stays.
The department of animal husbandry and fisheries, in collaboration with experts from Panjab University, prioritized native species suited to the lake's environment. This ensures the long-term health and aquatic biodiversity of Sukhna Lake, which serves as a vital urban landmark and ecological support system.
Regular stocking is deemed essential, as natural fish breeding alone cannot meet the lake's biological demands. The fish were dispersed across multiple points for even distribution. Meanwhile, controlled angling activities are permitted at specified locations, maintaining a balance between conservation efforts and regulated public access.
