Essex & Suffolk Water is spearheading this initiative to address rising demand in East Anglia, a region recognized by the Environment Agency as Seriously Water Stressed.
The project, part of a broader £1.5 billion investment across the East of England, seeks to ensure consistent water availability for future generations. It responds to the county's recent experiences with unusually dry periods, including the second driest March-May since 1921. The plan includes a recycling plant near Lowestoft and reservoirs near Sibton and Eye.
Company boss Monisha Gower stated that while current supplies meet existing needs, there's a challenge in accommodating increased demand from new commercial developments. The proposed infrastructure will create the necessary supply capacity and connectivity. Initial community feedback during a seven-week consultation period has been broadly supportive, indicating an understanding of the investment's necessity.
