11 Aug
Summary
- Wildfire ravaged RSPB Minsmere, a vital Suffolk nature reserve.
- The blaze destroyed an area equivalent to 210 football pitches.
- Nature reserve recovery could take up to 25 years.

A catastrophic wildfire recently devastated large sections of RSPB Minsmere, a significant nature reserve on the Suffolk coast. The inferno, which broke out on 29 July, also impacted neighbouring Dunwich Heath. Firefighting efforts spanned approximately two weeks to control the blaze that consumed an area estimated to be the size of 210 football pitches.
Conservationists now state that the delicate heathland habitat could require as much as 25 years to fully recover. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has initiated an emergency fundraising appeal, emphasizing that public support is crucial for beginning the restoration process. Area manager for Suffolk, Adam Rowlands, highlighted the urgency, noting that swift fundraising will enable the prompt commencement of restoration work, thereby offering the best chance for wildlife to rebound.
