- The fire covered an area equivalent to 210 football pitches.
A substantial wildfire that significantly impacted Dunwich Heath and the adjacent RSPB Minsmere on the Suffolk coast, starting on July 29th, has concluded with an undetermined cause. Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service spent two weeks at the scene investigating the blaze, which spanned an area equivalent to 210 football pitches.
Investigators identified the general origin point but confirmed that the fire's extreme severity obliterated any evidence that could pinpoint the exact cause. The fire service emphasized that the incident highlights the dangers of prolonged dry weather and the rapid spread of wildfires, urging residents and visitors to exercise caution in rural areas.
At its peak, the wildfire required the efforts of 120 firefighters from across Suffolk and neighbouring counties. Nearby holiday parks were evacuated, with volunteers providing temporary housing. Local farmers assisted in creating firebreaks to contain the spread, and fortunately, no properties were lost. Positive signs of nature's return to the affected reserve have since been observed.
