Stourbridge Canal Suffocates Under Sewage Spill
4 Mar
Summary
- A burst pipe released raw sewage into the Stourbridge Canal.
- Pollution campaigner noted absence of fish and invertebrates.
- Severn Trent Water is actively repairing the pipe.

The Stourbridge Canal has been partially closed due to a significant raw sewage leak, caused by a burst pipe near Wordsley Basin. The incident, which began early Tuesday morning, has resulted in visible pollution, including foam and an oily substance on the water's surface.
Pollution campaigner Reverend Paul Cawthorne reported observing the sewage as early as Sunday and expressed grave concerns for aquatic life, stating that fish and invertebrates are unlikely to survive. He attributed the issue to underinvestment in infrastructure, leading to frequent untreated sewage spills.
Severn Trent Water acknowledged the burst pipe and confirmed that its teams were immediately dispatched for emergency repairs. The company advised walkers and dog owners to steer clear of the area and apologized for any inconvenience caused. The Environment Agency has been contacted for comment regarding the incident.
