Storm Goretti Washes Container Debris Ashore

Storm Goretti has left a trail of debris along Brighton and Hove's south coast, necessitating extensive cleanup operations. Council teams have been working to clear shingle and miscellaneous items that accumulated on promenades and access points due to high tides and strong winds.

The situation has been exacerbated by the arrival of goods spilled from shipping containers lost near the Isle of Wight last year. Items such as food products, dust masks, gloves, and even thousands of onions have been found along the seafront, prompting safety warnings from Brighton and Hove City Council.

Authorities are urging the public to avoid the water's edge and refrain from handling any washed-up materials. While not classified as hazardous, the debris may be contaminated by seawater or contain sharp fragments from damaged containers. Volunteers have been assisting with the cleanup, but advice is to wear gloves and avoid direct contact.

Coastal protection work, including the construction of new groynes in Hove, is ongoing and intended to mitigate such impacts from future severe weather events. The council acknowledges the significant cost and ongoing nature of this cleanup, especially with more unsettled weather anticipated.
