Plastic Cup Lie? Tracker Study Exposes Recycling Myth
21 May
Summary
- GPS trackers revealed Starbucks cups are not recycled.
- 53 plastic cups were tracked from bins to landfills or incinerators.
- Watchdog group urges Starbucks to end misleading recycling claims.
An investigation conducted by the environmental watchdog group Beyond Plastics has cast doubt on Starbucks' claims that its plastic cups are "widely recyclable." Between January and March 2026, researchers used Bluetooth-enabled GPS trackers, glued into 53 plastic cups, to follow their journey from Starbucks recycling bins. These cups were placed in designated recycling bins in nine states and Washington D.C. The findings indicated a stark reality: not a single cup was traced to a recycling facility. Of the trackers that successfully transmitted their location, 16 pinged from landfills, nine from incinerators, and eight from waste-transfer stations. Three others were found at facilities that bale but do not recycle plastics. Beyond Plastics argues that Starbucks' labeling is deceptive, as the material, polypropylene, is rarely recycled due to a lack of specialized facilities. The group advocates for Starbucks to transition to fiber-based cups and encourage reusable options, urging an end to misleading recycling assertions. Starbucks has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the investigation's findings.
