Southern Water fined £7m for dumping sewage

Southern Water incurred a £7 million fine for dumping sewage off the Kent coast, severely impacting the local economy and tourism. The company pleaded guilty to 13 offenses concerning illegal discharges at Margate and Broadstairs wastewater pumping stations. These incidents occurred between 2019 and 2021, with some sewage being unscreened and containing solid waste.

Prosecutors highlighted significant delays in notifying the Environment Agency, with one discharge from Margate on July 20, 2019, going unreported for over 32 hours. Another incident on February 16, 2021, at Broadstairs involved untreated sewage being released for nearly five hours due to a technical error, with authorities notified only at the end.

The charges also included failures to notify authorities promptly, a breach of Southern Water's environmental permit. A lack of a standby pump at the Margate station between July 2019 and October 2020 also contributed to the offenses. These pollution events in June 2021 led to the closure of 11 Thanet beaches for a week, with tourism, a major industry for the area, experiencing significant negative effects.
