South Western Railway (SWR) has launched a series of sustainability initiatives aimed at reducing its environmental impact. General Manager P. Ananth highlighted the zone's commitment to green infrastructure, comprehensive electrification, and the integration of solar power. These efforts are complemented by strategies to optimize freight transport by shifting bulk commodities from road to rail, thereby cutting down emissions.
As part of a World Environment Day plantation drive, SWR personnel planted 750 saplings across the railway zone. The GM underscored the importance of embedding sustainability into daily operations. He also stressed the adoption of zero-waste practices, water recycling, eco-friendly waste management, and energy conservation measures. Campaigns against single-use plastics and littering, alongside energy-efficient building upgrades, are also key components of SWR's environmental strategy.
Ananth emphasized that railway professionals play a crucial role in balancing economic growth with environmental well-being. He described the railway as one of the nation's most sustainable transport modes, aligning with the World Environment Day theme, "Inspired by Nature for Climate for Our Future." The focus is on operating trains that are faster, cleaner, and smarter, ensuring a protected environment for future generations.
