Sewage Spills: Water Firm Accused of Hidden Discharges
8 Oct
Summary
- Over 3,000 sewage discharges allegedly not reported on time.
- Over 12,000 hours of dry weather sewage spills recorded.
- 625 people reported illness after water use in the region.
Surfers Against Sewage has claimed that South West Water failed to report more than 3,000 sewage discharges within the legally mandated hour during the first half of 2026. The conservation charity's annual water quality report also highlighted over 12,000 hours of sewage spills during dry weather. From January to August, 625 individuals reported feeling ill after engaging with rivers, lakes, and beaches in the South West region.
South West Water is reportedly reviewing the methodology used for its sewage discharge figures, suggesting potential differences in data interpretation. The company affirmed that it takes all reports of illness seriously. Since January 2025, water companies in England are required to report sewage discharges within an hour to inform the public about water conditions.
Giles Bristow, chief executive of Surfers Against Sewage, expressed concern over the implications of these unreported spills for public health and legality. He noted that across England, water companies have missed the reporting deadline over 50,000 times this year. Swimming coach Loretta Cox shared a personal account of severe illness after being in the sea off Looe last July, highlighting the potential health risks.
