Rows of solar panels in the Mojave Desert have created an unexpected haven for the threecorner milkvetch, a rare wildflower. Initial surveys before the Gemini solar project's construction northeast of Las Vegas identified only 12 of these plants across about 20 square kilometers. Astonishingly, recent surveys in 2024 recorded 93 individuals within the project's operational area.
Ecologists discovered that plants growing among the solar panels produced substantially more flowers and fruit compared to those in undisturbed desert. Specifically, milkvetch within the solar facility yielded approximately eight times more flowers and ten times more fruit. While survival rates were similar, enhanced reproduction is crucial for the annual plant's persistence.
The improved conditions are linked to how the solar panels alter the microclimate. They provide shade, reducing water loss from the soil, and the panel rows interrupt airflow, concentrating moisture. Crucially, the Gemini project limited ground disturbance during construction, preserving the existing seed bank in the soil. This allowed dormant seeds to germinate when the altered conditions proved favorable.
Researchers emphasize that this positive outcome is site-specific, depending on both the physical effects of the panels and the construction methods used. A solar project with extensive land clearing and grading could yield vastly different results, highlighting the importance of design in co-optimizing renewable energy and biodiversity.
