Vivekanand Kumar, a zoo biologist in Ranchi, has committed over two decades to rescuing snakes, with more than 2,200 reptiles saved. His journey began at age 14 in 2003, driven by a childhood fascination. Now in his 30s, he is also pursuing a PhD focused on snake diversity and distribution within Jharkhand.
Kumar actively works to dispel public fear, emphasizing that many snakes are non-venomous and pose little threat unless provoked. He offers his rescue services free of charge, responding to calls across the city and connecting with a network of rescuers in about 10 districts. His work includes saving both venomous and non-venomous species.
Beyond rescues, Kumar conducts vital awareness programs. He advises people on how to react calmly during snake encounters, suggesting actions like taking photos for identification or covering the snake with a blanket. He also stresses the importance of immediate medical attention in case of snakebites, providing guidance on first aid.
