- This brood of six is the largest encountered in 2026, a positive sign.
A glimmer of hope has arrived at Moor Farm near Peterborough with the discovery of a nest containing six barn owlets. The fluffy young birds, estimated to be between 40 and 50 days old, were ringed this week as part of ongoing conservation initiatives.
Farm owner Judith Jacobs expressed that the owlets are thriving, significantly lifting spirits. This positive news comes after the farm was targeted by six suspected arson attacks during the summer months.
Wildlife monitor Simon Dudhill described finding six owlets in one nest as "exceptionally good." He noted it was the largest brood he had encountered in 2026, having ringed over 260 owlets in Cambridgeshire this year.
Each of the Moor Farm owlets received a metal ring from the British Trust for Ornithology. This identification number allows conservationists to track individual birds and gather data on their movements.
