NGT Uncovers Major Waste Violations in Sirsa
3 Jun
Summary
- Untreated waste leachate flows into fields, risking contamination.
- Waste processing capacity is significantly lower than daily generation.
- NGT panel noted lack of groundwater monitoring and fire safety measures.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) joint committee has uncovered severe breaches of Solid Waste Management Rules at the Bakrianwali dumping site in Sirsa district. An inspection on April 21 revealed untreated leachate flowing into agricultural fields during rainfall, posing risks of pollution and groundwater contamination. The committee observed that fresh waste processing capacity was significantly less than the daily generation of approximately 200 MT.
Furthermore, the inspection report detailed the absence of crucial safety and monitoring systems. No groundwater monitoring wells, proper fire safety arrangements, or vehicle washing facilities were present. Large heaps of untreated "legacy waste" remained on-site, and even roadside dumping of waste and construction debris was evident. The committee recommended immediate corrective actions, including leachate treatment, bio-mining of old waste, and installation of monitoring wells.
