The first phase of improvements and eco-restoration at Silver Beach in Cuddalore, developed under the Blue Flag certification program, has concluded. This pilot project by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change has transformed a one-kilometer section into a Blue Flag beach, adhering to strict state government norms.
The Cuddalore Corporation invested ₹4 crore in beautification, introducing amenities like a grey water treatment plant, off-grid solar power, accessible pathways, washrooms, seating, selfie spots, watch towers, and beach cleaning machines. The beach also features a reverse osmosis plant, modular toilets, and changing rooms, with continuous seawater quality monitoring and deployed lifeguards ensuring safety.
Silver Beach is one of six state-selected beaches for sustainable tourism promotion, alongside others in Chennai, Thoothukudi, and Villupuram. The Blue Flag certification, awarded by the Foundation for Environment Education in Copenhagen, Denmark, requires adherence to 33 stringent criteria. This status will bolster tourism, support local fisheries, and advance sustainable coastal management, with the Chief Minister expected to inaugurate the facilities virtually.
