Migratory Birds Flock to Restored Sichuan
13 Jan
Summary
- Sichuan recorded 798 migratory bird species by the end of last year.
- Ecological restoration efforts have turned Sichuan into an ideal habitat.
- Qionghai Lake's restoration increased bird species to 310 in 2025.

Southwest China's Sichuan province is emerging as a crucial stopover and habitat for an increasing number of migratory bird species. This growth is attributed to sustained ecological restoration initiatives across the region.
As of the close of last year, Sichuan had documented 798 species of migratory birds, a number projected to surpass 800 this year. The province's strategic location along two major global migratory flyways facilitates this influx.
Extensive conservation efforts, including a decade-long project at Qionghai Lake, have revitalized wetlands and shorelines, dramatically increasing bird populations and encouraging some species to remain year-round.
