Sheffield Waste Site Ignites Government Clean-Up Plan
23 Mar
Summary
- An Attercliffe waste site has been under restriction since March 2023.
- Piles of waste encouraged rats and created awful smells for local businesses.
- Government will directly fund the clean-up of three major waste sites.

Owners of a Sheffield wholesale business have voiced distress over an adjacent waste site, described as "overflowing" with rubbish. This site on Worthing Road has been subject to a restriction order since March 2023, banning waste disposal and entry.
The proximity of the waste has led to significant issues, including the encouragement of "huge rats" and overwhelming smells during warmer months. The waste was piled so high it breached a dividing fence, causing distress and safety concerns for the neighboring 43-year-old family business.
The government has committed to directly fund the clean-up of this Sheffield site, along with two others in Wigan and Lancashire. These three sites collectively hold 48,000 tonnes of illegally dumped waste. This initiative is part of a broader plan to enhance enforcement powers for the Environment Agency against illegal dumping.
