Secret River Revealed at Sheffield Station
28 May
Summary
- A mile-long section of the River Sheaf is now visible.
- The light well aims to help wildlife and improve river health.
- Perch seats feature historical engravings and poetry.

Passengers at Sheffield Station can now witness a mile-long segment of the River Sheaf, a waterway concealed for more than 150 years. A newly installed light well at platform 5A, where the River Sheaf meets the Porter Brook, exposes a previously hidden shaft. This feature allows light to reach the river, encouraging the passage of fish and wildlife.
The project aims to 'put the Sheaf back into Sheffield' by improving the health of the river and its culverts. Safety measures, including perch seats, were incorporated to prevent accidents, particularly for those wearing high heels. These seats also serve as platforms for historical engravings and poetry.
Funded by various grants and income from river tours, the initiative reflects a broader goal of nature recovery and enhancing local well-being. The return of fish and mammals to urban waterways like the River Don, with salmon traveling from Newfoundland, inspires efforts to improve local river ecosystems.
