Eco-Hub Approved Despite Bird & Wood Concerns
13 Apr
Summary
- A clean energy charging hub for HGVs was approved near ancient woodland.
- Concerns were raised over endangered birds and a skylark territory.
- The hub will provide EV, bio-fuel, and hydrogen refuelling.

A planned clean energy charging hub for commercial vehicles in Ecclesfield, Sheffield, has received approval from Sheffield City Council's planning committee, despite environmental concerns. The hub, proposed by Aegis Energy, will be situated on a former industrial site near Smithy Wood and the M1 motorway.
The development aims to support the transition away from fossil fuels in the commercial transport sector. It will feature EV charging bays and sustainable bio-fuel and hydrogen refuelling facilities for 35 HGVs and 68 light commercial vehicles, alongside driver welfare amenities and a truck wash.
Objections were raised by local residents, a councillor, Ecclesfield Parish Council, and the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust. Key concerns included the proximity to ancient woodland and the impact on a skylark territory, a red-listed endangered bird species. Council ecologists, however, determined there would be no negative impact on the ancient woodland situated 50 metres away.
During the debate, conditions were enhanced to safeguard the skylark territory. While acknowledging the loss of habitat for the birds on the specific site, planning officers noted the availability of alternative sites in the area. The Wildlife Trust argued that sacrificing natural climate regulators like ancient woodland is inconsistent with promoting cleaner infrastructure to combat climate change.
Aegis Energy stated that commercial transport is a significant contributor to carbon emissions and difficult to decarbonise. They emphasized that facilities like this are crucial for reducing barriers to cleaner operations, improving energy security, and enhancing human health through reduced pollution. The approved plan is subject to stringent conditions and legal agreements to ensure high standards for drainage, landscaping, lighting, and ecological mitigation.
