4 Sep
Summary
- A national nature park is planned for Shaoguan's Danxiashan.
- Fifty-nine new species discovered, including endangered plants.
- Danxiashan retains UNESCO green card for conservation efforts.

Shaoguan is advancing plans to establish a national nature park, centered on the globally recognized Danxiashan area. A long-term forest monitoring project, a collaboration between the Danxiashan National Nature Reserve Administration and Sun Yat-sen University, has commenced. This initiative aims to provide critical scientific data for ecosystem assessment and conservation management of Danxia landscapes.
Danxiashan, a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2015, recently secured its fourth consecutive green card certification for conservation and scientific management, spanning 2025-28. The park has significantly enhanced its ecological protection, infrastructure, and visitor interpretive systems, fostering scientific research and sustainable tourism.
An international alliance was proposed in December 2025 to foster global collaboration on Danxia landscape research and conservation. This platform will facilitate joint surveys, data sharing, and promote sustainable development under the principle of prioritizing conservation.
Recent biodiversity surveys since 2021 have been highly productive, with nearly one new species discovered monthly, bringing the total to 59. These include the critically endangered plant *Aspidistra danxiashanensis* and the fungus *Leucoinocybe danxiashanensis*, contributing valuable data on distribution and conservation needs.
