Shanxi's Green Pivot: Coal Mines Now Solar Farms
11 Sep
Summary
- Shanxi transforms former coal subsidence areas into solar and wind power bases.
- Hydrogen trucks and geothermal heat are integrated into Shanxi's energy mix.
- Coal-fired power generation dropped below 50% in China for the first time.
Shanxi province, China's largest coal producer, is actively transitioning to a clean and diversified energy structure, aligning with national goals to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve neutrality by 2060. The province is systematically upgrading its industrial landscape, deploying automation and 5G in mines for efficiency.
Above-ground operations are transforming former coal subsidence areas into extensive solar and wind power bases. Concurrently, Shanxi is integrating hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles, utilizing geothermal resources for district heating, and capturing coal-mine methane for power generation.
This industrial transformation is vital for China's decarbonization, demonstrating how resource-dependent regions can upgrade economies while ensuring energy security. The recently concluded Taiyuan Energy Low Carbon Development Forum highlighted these efforts.
Nationally, coal-fired power generation dropped below 50% for the first time in the first half of 2026. As of July 2026, China's installed solar power capacity surpassed coal, becoming the largest single power source, accelerating the green transition.
Despite producing nearly 30% of China's national coal output between 2021 and 2025, Shanxi is rapidly breaking its dependency. In 2025, its new and clean energy power generation grew by 24.2%, with green electricity exports increasing by 31.3%.
