China Braces for More Severe Storms
1 Apr
Summary
- Another severe storm wave expected from Thursday night.
- Unstable cold-over-warm air mass causes spring storms.
- Squall lines bring strong winds and heavy rainfall.

Severe convective weather has impacted South China, with meteorologists forecasting another intense wave beginning Thursday night. This recent weather pattern is a result of spring's rapid ground warming creating an unstable "cold-over-warm" air mass, combined with other atmospheric factors.
The latest system originated in Yunnan and Guizhou provinces, producing fast-moving squall lines with strong winds and brief heavy downpours. These conditions affected regions like Guangxi and Guangdong, causing localized hail and winds up to 89 kilometers per hour.
While the current system is expected to weaken by Tuesday night, a new round of severe storms is predicted to start Thursday night in northern Guangxi and Guizhou. This new wave will likely spread to Hunan, Jiangxi, and other parts of southwestern and southern China, with an intensity comparable to the recent events.
Spring is a peak season for these powerful squall lines in China, which can generate destructive winds and, in rare instances, tornadoes. Residents in southern China are advised to remain vigilant as conditions similar to the recent severe weather are expected to persist, particularly with the approaching Qingming Festival.
