Grey seals are anticipated to gather at Lincolnshire's Donna Nook Nature Reserve this November and December, a period when they give birth to their pups. During this time, the Mablethorpe Seal Sanctuary actively prepares to assist any newborns that may become injured or orphaned. Sanctuary staff are ready to provide specialized care, ordering extra fish and rehydration fluids, particularly for the white-coated grey seal pups that need to be kept dry.
Rehabilitating seals year-round, the sanctuary increases its preparedness for the pupping season. Chloe Drew, a trustee, highlights the vital work involved, noting that while rewarding, medical interventions can be costly. She also stresses the importance of visitor safety and respect, cautioning that seals, though cute, can deliver severe bites. Drew encourages donations to support both the sanctuary and the reserve's conservation efforts, reminding visitors to listen to wardens at Donna Nook.
The Donna Nook National Nature Reserve spans over 6 miles of coastline. A portion of the area is maintained by the Ministry of Defence for bombing practice. Visitors are strictly advised to remain within designated viewing areas and to observe all military warnings, such as red flags, to ensure safety.
