Homeowner's Plea Stops Massive Solar Project
10 Jul
Summary
- Solar farm application was refused by Durham County Council.
- A resident feared being 'surrounded' by solar panels.
- The proposed farm was intended for green belt land.

Durham County Council has refused permission for a significant solar farm planned for green belt land in Seaham. Elements Green Renewables had proposed the farm, stating it would power approximately 16,000 homes. However, the council sided with objections from local residents, particularly one who expressed deep concerns about being "surrounded" by panels and the monumental impact on her family and garden.
Planning officers recommended refusal, concluding the development would harm the openness of the green belt and the surrounding landscape. While the developer argued for "very special circumstances" and clean energy benefits, citing a lack of suitable non-green belt alternatives with grid access, these arguments were not sufficient.
The decision was made despite 79 letters of support highlighting climate change benefits, energy security, and job creation. Numerous local groups, including the Campaign to Protect Rural England, also formally objected.
