Turtle Rescued: Hooked Loggerhead Hoisted Over Railing
20 Jun
Summary
- Rescuers hoisted a 172-pound loggerhead turtle to safety.
- The turtle, Bowser, had multiple hooks, one in his esophagus.
- Santa Rosa County leads Florida in pier entanglements.

A 172-pound loggerhead sea turtle, identified as Bowser, was the subject of a dramatic rescue off a Florida fishing pier. Anglers accidentally hooked the loggerhead near its left flipper, necessitating a swift response from volunteers at the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center. The turtle was hoisted approximately 35 feet over a railing using a specialized hoist and rope system. This rescue effort took only 25 minutes from the time the volunteers arrived.
Upon examination at the Gulfarium CARE Center, Bowser was found to have three hooks embedded in him. One hook was located in his flipper, and critically, another was lodged in his esophagus. This incident underscores the significant threat posed by human-caused injuries, such as fishing gear entanglement, to sea turtle populations.
Navarre Beach has become a hotspot for such incidents, with Santa Rosa County accounting for 56% of reported fishing-pier entanglements on Florida's Gulf Coast between 2000 and 2022. Bowser was the 26th turtle rescued from this particular pier in 2026 alone. Beyond hooks and discarded fishing line, sea turtles also face threats from climate change, including severe storms and habitat disruption.
Conservationists stress that trained responders are vital for sea turtle survival. Anglers are encouraged to contact authorities if they hook a sea turtle, as they will not face penalties. Fast and informed action can significantly improve a turtle's chances of survival and recovery.
